2015 Gibson Les Paul Special Double Cutaway

GIBSON LES PAUL SPECIAL DOUBLE CUTAWAY (2015)

Well, I certainly have a warm spot for the Double Cutaway Les Paul Specials… For me they were always very much a work horse guitar.. you know, the guitar you bring to rehearsals… and this is the 3rd one I have owned… My

first being a Hammer in the 80’s, the second (which I still have) is an Epiphone single P-90 version that I used as the base of the second HELLCAT and that is a beast! Having said that it spurred me to start to look at the

original Gibson Double Cutaway. Well, as you probably already know, the very cool vintage guitars are very expensive! Then I saw the new 2015 models and was intrigued. The features are many and the price was

reasonable. I purchased this Gorgeous Vintage Burst model…. I was first struck by the light weight and the wide, thin-tapered neck.. I replaced the G-Force tuning mechanizium as I am old school and try to keep it simple. I

also replaced the Pickups with a Set of Lindy Fralin P-90s with a Hum-cancelling P-90 in the bridge position and added a Bigsby Tremolo.

TELE BASS (’72-74 Vintage Vault Finish)

TELE BASS (’72-74 Vintage Vault Finish)

Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, the Telecaster Bass was always a Bass that I coveted. They were expensive and a bit off the beaten path but, still only just enough to make them highly desirable. I knew an older player who had one and I always loved to watch him play it. I was young and knew very little about these instruments, plus a guitar was barely affordable let alone a Bass. I secretly told myself that I would one day have one. That day has arrived. This is a brand new Telecaster Bass (72-74 Vintage Vault). The Body and Neck are from All Parts. The Hardware is all Original Fender Vintage Style with a period specific Serial No. on the neck plate. The Pickup is a Lindy Fralin Hum-Cancelling Single-Coil Split. This is a great pickup which retains the vintage tone and output of the original pickup only without the hum. The finish was done by one of the best in the business Scotty Huffman from The Guitar Tone Shop. I cannot say enough about Scotty’s work. He is extremely knowledgeable and very very talented. Just look at the pictures… they say it all.

This is a fantastic affordable Classic (Vintage Vault) Telecaster(ish) Bass. Someone is going to get a real Gem!

JD RODEO CUSTOM / Continued

JD RODEO CUSTOM

So what do we have hear?.. I posted this little gem a few months ago and am still getting requests for more information about this
great little custom guitar…

First, I must divulge that I have owned a few Rickenbacker 330’s in the past and am a huge Fan of these classic instruments…. but to continue, I set out to create a Rickenbacker influenced Guitar that solved what I saw to be major draw-backs in the original and to drag this classic guitar into modern times… The way this guitar turned out is really why I do this type of thing…  as with all of my custom guitars, they start with an idea for something I would like to play… and if I can’t find it.. I just go out and build it!

This guitar is one of the best I have had the pleasure to build…. Although, It was a process as the body and neck weren’t finalized until I had gone through two complete prototypes ..In the end it went from a CNC machined body to a hand carved body… I certainly had some help with the final body and it is heavily chambered and has a hand carved top. In section the body has an arched top with a flat back and a radius edge (see photos below) it is both ergonomic and very light weight. The neck is a Warmouth custom ordered neck with a ’59 Round-Back profile, 10 Inch Radius, Ebony Finger Board, a Bone Nut and Shark Fin Pearl Fret Markers.

The Bridge is an L.R. Baggs (That alone is a a major advance on the original) with a Piezo Pickup along with the Control X set-up (set up with a blend knob). For the other Pickups I spoke to Lindy Fralin and following his suggestion I had him wind me a set of one off, prototype Mini Humbuckers… I cannot say enough about these pups!.. He wound them specifically so they can both “Ring like Bell” and “Scream and Sqawk” when needed… This guitar can handle any sitiuation you find yourself in… be it rehersal, recording or just jamming.

I want to give credit where credit is due.. so I send a special thanks out to Kevin at One Eyed Jack Guitars and Tom for his early CNC work… and of coarse… Scotty at the “Guitar Tone Shop” for his awsome finish….
Simply put … This Guitar is…. EXCEPTIONAL!!!!

I will end it here, but before I go… I ‘ve added many photos including some construction photos … so take a look and enjoy…

Firebird BLUEBIRD (Non Reverse)

Firebird

BLUEBIRD CUSTOM

Paul McCartney was given a prototype Non-Reverse Firebird in the late 60’s.  The guitar was a unique lefty, but it also it had a number of features not present on any other contemporary model... This was the guitar he used through0ut the “McCartney” and “Ram” Lps.  The solo on “Maybe I’m Amazed” is this Firbird.   Brian Jones also had one of these and played it on Beggars Banquet… the sound is undeniable and completely identifiable.  What an Exceptional Sound!  I always liked those ’71 McCartney / Ram promo photos. I coveted the instrument.  Since I couldn’t find one to purchase… I decided to build one!  The first thing you will notice on this beauty is the Stunning Phthalo Blue Finish.  This is a very rare color indeed! (I never knew the color because all the Photos of this guitar are black and white).. and you simply cannot tell from the source images.  In the last few years it was finally accurately reported that this guitars’ color is in-fact Phthalo Blue.   It is a fairly Dark Blue.  Once I knew that…the build was On!

The Body and Neck are Mahogany.  The neck is Custom Made to Order by Warmouth with a 10″ Radius and 59 Round-back Profile. The Pickups are a full matching set of 3 Seymore Duncan Antiquity Mini-Humbuckers.  This Guitar also sports a Jimmy Page 6 position toggle switch.  It also has a Bigsby Tremolo.  It has a 4 bolt neck instead of an original set-neck.  The original Firebirds always had neck issues.  I have had a vintage Bird where the neck (at the headstock) snapped while sitting in it’s case..  I Solved this problem by using a much stronger and superior Bolt on Neck and what a Neck it is!!!  Other than the bolt on Neck and this being a Right Handed Non-Reverse version, it is a faithful reproduction of Paul McCartneys’ Iconic Bird right down to the prototype Bird logo on the faux anodized gold pick guard.   I love these Non Reverse Firebirds and I realize they are not for everybody but this Bird is special…it lacks many of the negative issues of the originals and it’s Style matches it’s Playability and Sound!

This guitar not only looks like the original that inspired it… It is a Blues Monster!!! It really is a Special Guitar!!!  Check out the pix and join me in the admiration I have for this wonderful Unique Guitar!!!

LOOK WHAT’S COMING!

Here at Classic Tone Guitars, I’d  like to think that I can use my site as a repository for new items, new designs, and thoughts.. Continuing with this theme… Here are two new products that I want to introduce to you… I find this part of the process the most fun… This is the design and gathering phase… here I draw a mockup of the guitar I am thinking of doing (you might have noticed the various mockups in my site)  this allows me to hash out all the details.. and you would be surprised how close the mockups look to the finished product many times they are done up to a year before the actual guitar is even started … I also am amassing the parts I need if I do not already have them…and I also begin to talk to my  guys who will end up helping with things that I may not be able to do myself (the metal plates being a good example of this)…. then I make sure I can pay for all of this.. Many times cost is the only reason the Guitar is not built yet… In fact I have two or three other guitars sitting in cases in pieces.. waiting for the cash to finish it or the right paint to become available… etc.  For example I have a new three pickup “Rodeo” and a new “SRF” waiting in caases… with all the parts needed… in these two cases I am only waiting for one piece…..

So…. Here you go…. Enjoy!

Thank you ,

Joe
